Tuy nhiên, đây không phải dịch vụ dành cho những người ham mê viết lách bởi công cụ Note trên đó đòi hỏi những thao tác rắc rối mỗi khi người dùng muốn in đậm, nghiêng, thay đổi cỡ chữ, màu sắc… và họ sẽ phải nhờ đến ứng dụng blog của bên thứ ba.

Ứng dụng này ra mắt đúng thời điểm Yahoo chính thức tuyên bố đóng cửa dịch vụ Yahoo 360 sau một thời gian duy trì ở mức hạn chế (sau ngày 13/07, các bloggers sẽ không thể truy câp được các dữ liệu trên Yahoo!360). Ngoài Facebook ra, những mạng xã hội khác như Yahoo 360 plus cho đến Tamtay, Yume, Yobanbe, Cyworld, Multiply... cũng giới thiệu tính năng sao chép entries từ Yahoo 360 khiến các bloggers phân vân không biết đi đâu về đâu.

Một trong những điểm đến nổi bật là Facebook - mạng xã hội phổ biến nhất thế giới. Hiện Việt Nam có khoảng 150.000 tài khoản trên dịch vụ Facebook. Tuy nhiên, Facebook thiên về kết nối, giao tiếp hơn là viết blog.

Ứng dụng của Tinh Vân giúp người sử dụng tiếp tục sáng tác các entry mới ngay trên Facebook. Thời gian chuyển bài viết nhanh (300 bài chỉ mất 15 phút với đủ text, ảnh, Flash... nhưng không giữ lại được comments). Nhóm phát triển của Tinh Vân cho biết họ đang tiếp tục bổ sung tinh năng như cho phép sửa, xóa các entry cũ và nhập comment.

Việc các bloggers hiện nay thích liên tục thay đổi blast, status (dòng cập nhật tin tức) biểu đạt cho người khác biết họ đang làm gì, vui hay buồn... mà không cần thiết gửi thư như trước.

Người dùng của các trang xã hội như Facebook, Yahoo 360 Plus... có thể liên tục thay đổi trạng thái bản thân trên blog như "Có ai nói chiện với tui không?", "Ăn sáng nào !!!", "Bận roài"... (Trước đây, họ phải chia sẽ bằng cách chat với bạn chat của họ), những nay blast là mục được thay đổi thường xuyên nhất trên blog.

David Sacks - nhà sáng lập mạng xã hội Yammer - cho biết "Tôi nghĩ, cập nhật status là tất cả những gì người ta muốn làm khi tham gia social network". Còn theo Paul Buchheit - trưởng nhóm phát triển Gmail - sở thích này của các bloggers đã tạo nên một hình thức liên lạc mới, đơn giản hơn và thay đổi theo thời gian thực. Ngoài ra, các bạn có thể comment (bình luận) hay trao đổi tin nhắn (message) với nhau mà không cần biết địa chỉ e-mail của nhau.

Tuy nhiên, các mạng xã hội phải giải quyết được vấn đề tương thích để đạt chuẩn e-mail 2.0. Người sử dụng tài khoản Hotmail hoàn toàn có thể gửi thư sang Yahoo! Mail hay nhận thông điệp từ Gmail, trong khi Yahoo! 360 không thể tương tác với người dùng ở MySpace, Facebook...

Một số giao thức chuẩn đang được phát triển nhưng còn tùy vào các mạng xã hội có chấp nhận chia sẻ dữ liệu với mạng khác hay không. Twitter đã đạt được nhiều thành công khi cho phép khai thác dữ liệu của họ. Nhờ đó, thành viên của dịch vụ tiểu blog này có thể cập nhật status cho Facebook, nhưng chưa thể thực hiện chiều ngược lại. Buchheit chia sẽ "Chúng ta cần có những hệ thống mở hơn, trong đó mọi thứ phải được liên kết với nhau."

Các nước đang phát triển đang chập chờn vì sử dụng internet quá nhiều

Facebook lan truyền mạnh ở Ấn Độ, lượng người xem YouTube tăng nhanh ở Việt Nam… Nhưng đây không hẳn là một tin tốt vì một số công ty Internet còn định ngừng cấp dịch vụ do nguồn lợi nhỏ bé tại những nước này.

Các quốc gia đang phát triển là nơi tốn kém nhất của các công ty internet vì hạn chế băng thông, nhà cung cấp phải đầu tư thêm máy chủ để đảm bảo chất lượng dịch vụ. Nhưng đáng tiếc là quảng cáo tại những nước đó hiếm khi đạt được kết quả cao.

Sự việc này đang là gánh nặng cho nhiều mạng xã hội và các site chia sẻ. Năm ngoái Veoh - dịch vụ video trực tuyến ở San Diego (Mỹ), đã ngừng cung cấp tại các nước châu Phi, châu Á, châu Mỹ Latin và Đông Âu do sự chênh lệch quá lớn giữa chi phí và lợi nhuận.

"Tôi tin vào một nền truyền thông mở và miễn phí", Dmitry Shapiro - giám đốc của Veoh - giải thích. "Nhưng họ (người dùng ở các nước đang phát triển) dường như quá khát thông tin. Họ chỉ xem, xem và xem. Họ tiêu tốn quá nhiều băng thông mà chúng tôi lại không thu được lợi gì từ việc đó".

Các công ty Internet trong kỷ nguyên Web 2.0 từng quan niệm: "Cứ mở rộng lượng độc giả toàn cầu càng lớn càng tốt bằng cách mang đến những dịch vụ miễn phí và sẽ bù lại bằng doanh thu quảng cáo". Nhưng một thực tế cay đắng trong số 1,6 tỷ người có khả năng tiếp cận Internet, chưa tới một nửa có thu nhập đủ hấp dẫn các nhà quảng cáo.

YouTube là một ví dụ rất điển hình. YouTube được giới chuyên môn phân tích sẽ lỗ khoảng $470,000,000 trong năm nay vì phí truyền tải hàng tỷ video mỗi tháng. Tuy nhiên, bên Google phản bác nhận xét trên và từ chối tiết lộ tình hình tài chính của YouTube.

"Băng thông ở châu Á và Trung Đông rất đắt nhưng quảng cáo lại chẳng đáng là bao", Michelangelo Volpi - Giám đốc website chia sẻ video Joost với hơn nửa số khán giả nằm ngoài nước Mỹ - "Nếu các công ty web thực sự muốn kiếm tiền, họ sẽ ngừng hoạt động ở tất cả những nước này".

Hiện nay, nhiều dịch vụ đang tìm giải pháp tốt nhất ở quốc gia đang phát triển, điển hình như MySpace - mạng xã hội thu hút 130 triệu thành viên - đang thử nghiệm phiên bản rút gọn mang tên Profile Lite tiêu tốn băng thông ít hơn. Tom Pickett, Giám đốc kinh doanh trực tuyến tại YouTube, cho biết họ vẫn cung cấp video cho toàn thế giới nhưng hạn chế mở các cổng quốc tế mới và tập trung hơn vào việc kiếm tiền. Facebook cũng đang xem xét việc giảm bớt chất lượng video và ảnh ở một số khu vực trên thế giới.

"Chúng tôi sẽ quyết định dựa trên tình hình mỗi nước hoặc trên nhu cầu của người dùng để kiểm soát chất lượng dịch vụ", Jonathan Heiliger của Facebook chia sẻ. Việc này không hề dễ dàng vì 70% trên 200 triệu thành viên Facebook sống bên ngoài nước Mỹ và công ty đang gồng mình lưu trữ 850,000,000 và 8,000,000 video được đăng lên Facebook mỗi tháng.

Veoh vẫn đang chờ liệu có nên thu hẹp nhóm người sử dụng hay không. "Một nửa trong tôi nói điều đó thật bất công, không nên làm như thế, nhưng nửa kia với góc nhìn kinh tế lại cho rằng phục vụ video cho cả thế giới là không phù hợp trong thời điểm này", Shapiro cho hay.
